Officers' Quarters 7
Officers' Quarters 7, begun in 1876 and finished in 1877, was the last quarters built on the post. The quarters is the only duplex on the site and was designed as bachelor officers' quarters. Col. Benjamin H. Grierson, commander of the 10th Cavalry and Fort Concho, had received permission to build two such duplexes in October, 1875. The second one was started at the site of the Schoolhouse and was abandoned. The Schoolhouse was constructed later on that foundation.
No. 7 has two rooms on the first floor and two rooms on the second floor with separate halls containing staircases on each side. Behind the structure was a stone kitchen with an apartment for servants above for each side of the house. Even the original backyard was separated into two parts by a stone fence.
After 1889, the building was vacant for many years, but from the late 1920's until the early 1970's it was an apartment house. Fort Concho purchased the property in 1971 and deeded it to the city in 1977. Today the quarters houses the museum's special events office and library.
