Barcks2.jpg (41113 bytes) Barracks  2

August 1869 marked the completion of Barracks 1 and Barracks 2, the two cavalry barracks built at Fort Concho.  This meant that the soldiers, or at least some of them, would be able to move out of the tents that had been home for the last two years.

Each of the barracks was built of double sets of squadron rooms 82' long with a sally port between the rooms.  A single company was to occupy a squadron room.   Unlike Barracks 1, Barracks 2 had only a single mess hall that both companies shared.

Today, Barracks 2 is open to the public as an exhibit hall showcasing the fort's reproduction artillery piece, limber and harness.
